Five Minutes with Kamuka
For the last year I have neglected my body and in turn my mind. I ate way too much take away food for lack of time and enthusiasm to cook and the little exercise that I did became a thing of the past. Needless to say this unhealthy lifestyle caught up with me, but a few months ago I had an epiphany and decided to make small changes like eating better through a vegan and vegetarian food delivery service that I have spoken about here, and more recently starting to practice yoga again which I have absolutely fallen in love with – goodbye stress!
Before I proceed with this post I want to note that I am by no means claiming to suddenly be super fit and live a very active lifestyle – anyone who knows me will agree that I am simply trying to live a better more balanced life and by rediscovering something I previously loved that fuses with my interest in supporting local businesses.
As I've been going to more yoga classes I realised that I had little to no active wear and I wanted to find a brand that shared the same values and ethos as I do. I try where possible to buy products that are sustainable and eco-friendly whether it's the food I eat, the clothes that I wear or what I put on my skin. Instagram of course led me Kamuka, a Sydney based luxury yoga and active wear company, which ethically manufactures all its products right here in Australia. Kamuka's thoughtfully and "lovingly designed products aim to assist and inspire people to cultivate a balanced lifestyle from the inside out" this statement resonated quite strongly with me as that is exactly what I am trying to achieve.
“Kamuka (Ka-Moo-Kah) means ‘desire’, the ‘desire to be free and to be yourself’ and that’s exactly what our company embodies” says founder Sarah Puckeridge. The story of Kamuka begins in 2013, Puckeridge was working in a Digital Printing Company after finishing her Graphic Design degree. Her boss at the time “[had] a world of knowledge in the printing and textile industry and discovered a technology that would allow [her] to print yoga mats.” That year she launched her first range of yoga mats and introduced the K-GRIP; a highly technical grip technology, “which ensures there is no slipping - no one wants a sliding out downward dog” and active wear was a natural progression for Kamuka.
Puckeridge says “the one rule about starting Kamuka was that all products must be produced in Australia.” She explains that they had both the facilities and contacts to do so and more importantly she was very passionate about “ethical manufacturing and supporting Australian businesses.” Keeping the production process in Australia also meant that all products are quality controlled and checked at every stage. I particularly love that their K1 Yoga Tights are created using 100% recycled polyester, it’s so great to see that they are responding to a growing demand for ethical and eco-friendly products.
Kamuka is best described as “Fun, Free and Happy” and this is very apparent when you look at the product, which is inspired by Puckeridge’s adventures in nature and growing up by the ocean. The current collection showcases contrasting textures, injections of colour and natural landscapes. I am wearing the Mountain Print, which I was very drawn to for both the print and for what it symbolises.I can’t wait to see the new collection which is partly inspired by Puckeridge’s personal paintings but for now you can shop the collection here and for a limited time use the code FLASHSALE50 to get 50% off their active wear range.
